A Better Test for a Blade That Only Pulls on One Side

Stop the uncomfortable pass, inspect the exact assembly and compare safely before blaming one cause.

A blade that seems to pull on one side needs a stopped inspection, not another pass to confirm the dog’s reaction. Remove the tool safely, switch it off and separate what you observed from your explanation. “Resistance at the left edge during this pass” is a useful observation. “The cutter is misaligned” is a diagnosis of the equipment that still needs evidence.

Give the technician a useful fault card

Keep this card with the quarantined assembly. It is more useful than “pulls sometimes” and does not require another uncomfortable pass.

  • Identity: clipper model, blade family/designation and any attachment.
  • First observation: working area, pass direction, which side seemed to resist and any sound or animal response.
  • Checks completed: manufacturer-supported stopped inspection, cleaning/lubrication and fitting checks, with findings.
  • Comparison, if safely supported: exact known-good compatible assembly, supported off-animal procedure or practice material, and what differed.
  • Disposition: kept out of use; service contact and inspection requested.

If the issue follows the suspect assembly in a supported comparison, ask for that assembly to be assessed. If it remains with a known-good compatible assembly, describe the shared clipper and conditions to the technician. Neither result tells you to adjust alignment or spring tension yourself.

Close the loop: attach the service finding and supported return-to-use checks to the card. If the fault returns, you have an actual sequence to investigate rather than a succession of replacement purchases.

Preserve the first useful facts

Record the clipper, blade family and exact designation, the working area, pass direction and any unusual sound or response. Note whether the issue began with this assembly or appeared after a change. Keep the dog’s comfort central; a mechanical comparison is not a reason to continue an uncomfortable groom.

Do not try to recreate a fault on a sensitive area or another dog. Where a safe off-animal check cannot resolve the cause, stop using the suspect assembly and seek the manufacturer or a qualified service technician.

Inspect only within the supported procedure

Follow the clipper and blade instructions for removal, cleaning, lubrication and refitting. Check for trapped hair, obvious damage and a secure compatible fit. Do not adjust tension, screws or cutter alignment by guesswork. A visible edge difference is information for a qualified inspection, not permission to reposition sharp parts yourself.

VUNRO #5F Blue Steel Dog Clipper Blade is a standard A5-family product. A D-Series or FlexFit PRO blade with a similar designation is not an interchangeable test part. Compare only assemblies specified as compatible with the actual clipper.

Check the coat-side explanation, too

Look at preparation and coat direction without operating the suspect blade. Was one edge entering a denser section, an unresolved tangle or a direction change? Did your pass angle or support differ? These observations can explain why resistance seemed local, but they do not prove the blade is sound.

Keep the two investigations separate. Resolving a tangle does not make a visibly damaged tool safe. Replacing a blade does not resolve an unsuitable grooming plan or a section that cannot be worked comfortably.

Use a controlled comparison only when safe

After approved maintenance and checks, a known-good compatible assembly can help narrow the issue, using the manufacturer’s supported check procedure and suitable practice material where appropriate. Keep the clipper and comparison conditions the same. Change one part at a time, and record which combination was checked.

If the issue follows the suspect blade while the comparison assembly performs normally, that supports further blade inspection. It does not establish which internal component failed. If both behave poorly, investigate the clipper, preparation and technique rather than buying blades repeatedly. No result overrides visible damage or an unsafe operating condition.

Make the service handover useful

Quarantine the suspect item so a colleague cannot accidentally return it to use. Label it with the fault observation, date and exact assembly. Send the technician the sequence, maintenance already performed and comparison result. Do not present an uncertain cause as settled fact.

When the repaired or replacement assembly returns, verify its identity and the supported functional checks before returning it to work. Preserve the record if the issue recurs. A useful endpoint is a safe working assembly and a supported explanation or service outcome, not simply another blade purchased.

Sources and scope

Lantra’s styling and finishing standard requires equipment checks, manufacturer-guided care and safe work within competence. It does not validate a home adjustment procedure for a pulling blade. Product details follow the linked VUNRO specifications.
